354. On Her Shoulders: Weaponizing Victim Stories to Perpetuate Wars?

Sharing a rather critical view on the documentary On Her Shoulders (2018) based on Nadia Murad’s story about having been a slave by ISIS and managing to escape to travel around the world and go to places like the U.N. to share her painful story – and even getting to win the Nobel Peace Prize- which to me sounds more like a convenient way for some to convince people that there are more reasons to keep intervening in Iraq and the Middle East.
This is another example of how an entire human’s group tragedy and plea – in this case the Yazidis of northern Iraq – becomes sensationalized by the media and weaponized by those who have other interests in keeping wars going. What could have been a better way to direct this documentary to respect and honor Nadia’s life experience and create a more educational outflow for it? Let’s find out.
